Conversation in Isolation - Meet The Team

Editors: Seraphina Choong and Vineeta Giri

Hi everyone! Today, we introduce you to Dewmi - one of our Volunteer Outreach Officers!

·       "Hi, what is your name and what are you studying?"

I’m Dewmi and I am in 4th year of medicine at Monash,

·       "Hi Dewmi! How would you describe yourself in 3 words?"

I’d like to think I’m friendly, hard-working and down-to-earth.

·       I can for one and I am sure the rest of the committee members can that attest that you are friendly and down-to-earth! While working hard in your role as an outreach co-ordinator to reach  out to both new and prospective community members as well as volunteers, is there something that you would like to share with our prospective community members and aspiring volunteers?"

To: Community members: No matter who you are, how old you are, or what you do, communication and connection is such a natural human need. Our growing community of volunteers and community members recognise this, and mutually benefit from regular conversations. Sometimes, there's a comfort in speaking to a person you've perhaps never met before, or in having a casual chat about your day with someone who will listen without judgement and without expectations. I'm sure you will benefit greatly from this experience, and I welcome you to our community!

To: Volunteers: If you feel awkward or shy when calling and reaching out, I think it helps to have the mindset that you’re calling an old friend. I’ve found it helps to set both yourself and the community member a bit more at ease, and prompts the conversation to go more smoothly. Know that our team is always happy to get in touch if you need help or support, and feel free to reach out to us via email or phone.

·       "That's amazing advice. As a volunteer yourself, do you have any cherished memory with your community member?"

I couldn’t pick one memory. I’ve had two community members so far, and they’ve been lovely to talk to. We’ve shared memories and experiences, and I’m grateful to have gotten to know these two people, whom I’ve never met face-to-face, on such a personal level.

·       "Awesome! Can you share with us 3 songs from your Spotify that highlight your personality?"

BTS- never mind; mxmtoon- lessons and Coeur de pirate- T’es belle.

·       “Love your choice. Did you have a furry friend to keep you company specially during the Iso?”

I have a cat named Molly. She likes to sleep on top of me while I work, and she snores, so I always have some lovely background noise when studying.

Thank you for this friendly conversation and giving us the chance to get to know you and your furry friend Dewmi!
